Swearing in for my 3rd term in Nov 2003

 

Thank you, voters!

I want to express my appreciation to all who supported my re-election to the Evergreen School Board, position 2.  I have a deep respect for the responsibility that is entrusted to me to serve in this capacity.  I will continue to do my best to govern with my fellow board members in a way that brings about the highest quality education for all of our community's children.

I would like to talk a little about the gravity of work your Evergreen School Board oversees. We are the largest employer in Clark County.  Decisions made impact nearly 26,000 students, 3,000 employees, higher education institutions, local businesses, the local economy, and every household within our district boundaries.  We do so openly, subject to scrutiny at every turn by individual citizens and the media as we oversee: 

§    the largest education system in Clark County,

§    the largest restaurant service in Clark County,

§    the largest transportation system in Clark County, and

§    the largest budget in Clark County.   

In my mind this is not the place for single minded agendas, or lip service in response to “the criticism of the day”.  This position requires:

§    an understanding of this community’s expectations,

§    passion for our children’s future opportunities,

§    an aptitude for seeing the “big picture” without losing sight of the individual,

§    a willingness to overcome barriers and build relationships

§    the ability to identify problems and find solutions, and

§    courage to make a decision and stand by it, even if it brings criticism.

Providing a quality learning experience for every student is our primary purpose.  In every department of the district, there is a growing understanding and commitment to be a resource for the classroom.

This district has made a lot of progress over the years which I hope you will see as you read the information in this site. Having said that, there is plenty of work left to be done and I am anxiously committed to seeing it done.

I hope that as you visit the different areas of this website, you get a feel for the commitment, responsibility and passion I feel for the position of School Director for Evergreen Public Schools.  I have done my best to consider all aspects of an issue before making a decision.  I’ve backed up those decisions with hard work and measurable ways to assess the outcomes.  I’m proud of the cohesive group this school board and Superintendent have become.  We are not one another’s “rubber stamp”, and are able to have the hard conversations necessary to answer the challenge of transforming a 20^th century education system into a 21^st century system.

I thank you for the confidence in me you have shown in the past and ask for your continued support this election.  I will continue, as I always have, dedicated to our students and this community.
